College Essay Couching

Struggling with College Essays? My Daughter Can Help.
My daughter Bokei recently returned from Taiwan, where she studied Mandarin at Tamkang University through the U.S. State Department’s NSLI-Y scholarship. Now home for the summer, she’s self-studying college-level calculus and seeking meaningful ways to spend her time.
I suggested she help high school students with their college application essays, given her own successful experience and her role in helping a friend gain admission to the University of Pennsylvania. At first, she hesitated: “College applications are a big deal,” she said. “What if I don’t do them justice?”
But I reminded her: “You’ve navigators this process successfully, applying to Ivy League schools and top liberal arts colleges, and earning acceptances to UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UC San Diego. Your high school English teacher wrote in your Princeton recommendation that you were her strongest writer in four years. Your insight surpasses that of many paid consultants.”
Bokei is thoughtful, meticulous, and holds herself to an exacting standard. With family encouragement, she’s ready to offer her expertise. This summer, she’s providing one-on-one support with college admissions essays, where she feels she can make a real difference.
Here’s what she offers:
- Essay Coaching (~300-word responses): Polishes and elevates drafts in 1–2 hours. Students must provide an initial draft (no ghostwriting).
- Rate: $50/hour, with most essays completed in 2 hours or less.
Her goal isn’t to build a business but to help students craft compelling, authentic essays and gain confidence in their applications. Fluent in Mandarin and familiar with cross-cultural perspectives, she can connect with students from diverse backgrounds.
Her twin brother, Bolun, is home this summer assisting with research for a UCLA computer science professor. Also accepted to UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD, he chose UCLA’s computer science program and is happy to share his application insights.
This fall, Bokei will begin at Amherst College, likely majoring in neuroscience. Both she and Bolun, admitted to prestigious schools like Amherst and UCLA, bring valuable lessons from their application journeys. Bolun also received a full-tuition scholarship to a top liberal arts college but chose UCLA.
As their mom, I’ve witnessed their journeys and am proud to share Bokei’s offer. For genuine, student-to-student guidance on your teen’s college essays, reach out to Bokei—she understands and cares deeply.

I posted this for Bokei today, and honestly, I’m really happy to be starting this new chapter with her. We're not doing this to chase money — I’ve always believed that money should be the result, not the goal.
This year has been a little emotional for me. I’m now 56 — the same age my dad was when he passed away. I still remember what he once told me: “As your father, I hope I can help you onto the horse and walk with you a while.” But he never got that chance — he left too soon.
Now, I just want to walk this journey with my kids, side by side, step by step. In a way, it feels like a tribute to my parents — and a way to bring them some peace.
